Immunizations Q & A

What are immunizations?

Immunizations, or vaccinations, are a way of protecting the body from disease through the introduction of disease cells into your the immune system. The immune system naturally takes this small part of the disease and creates an immunization against it.

By introducing the body to various diseases in small amounts, immunizations can assist the body in building a defense against a variety of communicable diseases. A number of immunizations are recommended for people in each stage of life, starting with newborns.

Some immunizations are administered just once in lifetime. Others must be repeated more than once or yearly to be effective.

What immunizations should children get?

Dr. Ho’s office uses the recommended immunization schedule for infants and children released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This schedule includes vaccinations for a number of communicable diseases, some of which are no longer present in the United States due to immunization.

A typical immunization schedule allows for vaccination for the following diseases by age 6, or by the time school begins. These diseases include:

  • Chickenpox
  • Diphtheria
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hib
  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Polio
  • Rotavirus
  • Pneumococcal
  • Tetanus
  • Rubella
  • Whooping cough

The CDC also recommends your preteen and teen children receive these vaccines:

  • HPV
  • Meningococcal conjugate
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap)

Several of the recommended vaccines need to be repeated over the course of a child’s life, and most are given at least once by the time a child is 23 months old. To establish effective immunization, it is important that you follow a schedule that Dr. Ho provides you.

What immunizations do adults need?

Vaccinations are not just for children. As an adult, you may need to either boost or establish your immunization against certain diseases. If you travel out of the country, recommended vaccinations depend on your destination.

These vaccinations may include:

  • Typhoid
  • Yellow fever
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Polio

It is important you check with the CDC about recommended vaccinations before you travel out of the country.

To protect your health as you age, important vaccinations to receive may be:

  • Flu
  • Pneumonia
  • Shingles
  • Tetanus

As your family medicine physician, Dr. Ho recommends the vaccinations you and each member of your family needs to keep you as healthy as possible throughout your life.
